Baggage Claim and Arrivals Set Dressing: Luggage Carts, Signage and Props

Arrivals scenes carry a lot of emotion: reunions, missed connections, lost bags and the first moments in a new city. They also have a very specific look that audiences recognize instantly, from rows of luggage carts to flight information screens and illuminated travel ads. This guide is for production designers, set decorators, prop masters and producers planning baggage claim set dressing and arrivals hall scenes for film, TV, commercials and music videos. It covers the zones of an arrivals area, the luggage carts and skycap carts you can rent from our airport luggage props in Los Angeles, and the signage and details that make the space read as an airport on camera.

Map the arrivals journey

An arrivals area is a sequence of spaces, and each one has its own props. Decide which of these your scene actually needs before you build a list:

  • Customs and passport control for international arrivals.
  • Baggage claim, where passengers wait, collect bags and load carts.
  • The arrivals hall, where families wait and drivers hold name signs.
  • Curbside, where skycaps, benches and pickup lanes take over.

Most scenes use one or two of these zones. Agree with your director and director of photography which direction the wide shot looks, then dress that sightline first.

Luggage carts: the signature prop of baggage claim

Nothing says baggage claim faster than a line of passenger luggage carts. We carry two styles, each with a matching pay station so you can show the cart rental point as well as the carts:

Tall style carts and kiosk

The tall style luggage cart is our largest group, with 26 available. It is designed for the brown tall style cart kiosk, a pay station whose rails come in 15 ft or 30 ft lengths. Carts and kiosk are rented separately, so order both if you want carts lined up in the rails.

Short style carts and kiosk

The short style luggage cart has 14 available and pairs with the gray and yellow short style cart kiosk, which has 15 ft rails. Again, the carts are ordered separately from the kiosk.

How many carts?

For a background-only baggage claim, a handful of loaded carts in frame plus a filled kiosk rail is usually enough. If background actors will push carts through the shot, plan one cart per moving extra plus spares for the rail, so the kiosk never looks empty between takes.

Luggage that reads on camera

Carts need bags. Our modern luggage includes check-in and carry-on pieces, depending on current inventory, and pilot and briefcase style luggage works for crew walking through arrivals. Mix sizes and colors so the pile looks like many different travelers, and keep a few hero bags clean and distinct for any character whose suitcase matters to the plot.

Curbside and skycap service

Step outside the doors and the props change. Skycap carts and dollies sell curbside check-in, hotel arrivals and heavy-bag moments:

Add exterior seating for pickup zones: metal grid benches, mesh style benches (17 in high x 6 ft long, 3 matching), slat benches and stainless steel benches all work outdoors.

Customs and passport control

International arrivals need a document check before baggage claim. The TSA “InfoPass” passport kiosk, with blue sides and a gray front, and our black passport scanner with a slide-in flap (3 matching) give you a believable control point. Stanchions from our airport stanchions range turn it into a queue.

Signage, screens and travel advertising

Signage is what tells the audience this is arrivals rather than departures:

  • The “Arrivals” hanging sign is 5 ft wide x 15 in high, double sided and lightweight, and matches our Departures, Terminal, Check-In and All Gates signs.
  • Working arrivals/departures monitor walls show your own flight information, including the moment a flight changes to “landed” or “delayed”.
  • Our 9 ft directional wall and 8 ft totem directional sign take your own cleared wayfinding graphics, such as “Baggage Claim” or “Ground Transportation”.
  • Wall-mounted fabric lightbox signs add illuminated travel advertising. Horizontal 6 ft x 4 ft designs include “Get Lost”, “Travel New York”, “Travel France” and “Find Your Paradise”, and vertical 4 ft x 6 ft designs include “Stay Connected” and “Duty Free”.

Keep real airline and airport names out of frame. Use a fictional airline on the screens and your own graphics on the directional signs so everything matches.

Finishing details

  • Chrome trash cans with black trim (10 available) along walls and pillars.
  • Charging stations where waiting passengers gather.
  • Courtesy wall phones on columns for paging scenes.
  • Crew and ground staff in uniform; see our airline crew wardrobe guide.

If your scene needs a baggage carousel, ask us what is available when you request a quote, or plan the coverage around carts, bags and signage so the carousel stays out of frame.

Connect it to the rest of the airport

Arrivals is the last stop in the passenger journey. Our check-in counter set dressing guide and airport gate set dressing guide cover the departure side. To shoot in a finished space, our sister company Air Hollywood offers an airport terminal set you can customize with our props.

Frequently asked questions

Do the luggage carts come with the kiosk?

No. The tall and short style cart kiosks (pay stations with rails) and the carts are rented separately, so order both if you want carts in the rails.

How many luggage carts can I rent?

Up to 26 tall style carts and 14 short style carts, plus skycap carts in red and blue and a skycap dolly.

Can I show my own flight information on the arrivals screens?

Yes. Our arrivals/departures monitor walls are working displays, so you can program your own flights, times and statuses.

How do I book arrivals and baggage claim props?

Add the items to your props bin and submit a quote request. No account is required, and we aim to reply within 24 hours. More answers are on our aviation prop rental FAQ.
